Lençóis Maranhenses National Park
is located on the northeast coast of the state of Maranhão in Brazil. Lençóis in Portuguese means “bedsheets” because that’s what this unique landscape seems. When it is just a few hundred kms from the delta of the Amazon River is not expected to find a desert. The park is more than 1500 sq km (580 sq mi), is composed of giant white sand dunes. Their dramatic shapes formed over thousands of years by rivers and their mouths. The dunes stretch up to 50 km (31 mi) inland and extend 43 km (27 mi) along the coastline. The climate is equatorial, with little arid as the Sahara Desert, in the first half of the year it rains and the flat areas between the dunes, fill with water, creating hundreds of freshwater lakes. The Lagoa Bonita and the Lagoa da Gaivota are the two biggest lagoons and provide wonderful opportunities to swim in its crystal clear waters. Don’t miss the awesome beaches at Lençóis Maranhenses. São Luis, the capital of the state of Maranhão is a great getaway to visit Lençois Maranhenses National Park. Hotels in Maranhão State
