Belém, Portuguese word for Bethlehem,

was founded in 1616 as Feliz Lusitania. Located in northeastern Brazil, Belém has easy access to the canal south of the Amazon, was ideally placed to prevent the British, Dutch and French invaded Portuguese lands. Later the city played an important role in the export of rubber to North America and Europe. Belém has strong connections to Portugal especially in architecture as the Basilica of Nazareth and Castle Fortress. There are other beautiful buildings much like Antonio Lemos Palace, the College Gentil Bettencourt, the Theatro da Paz, Museum of the Arts of Belem, Mangal Garças Park and Batista Campos Square, the square in the heart of the city.
