Meknes is one of the four imperial cities of Morocco.
Situated in a fertile plain, Meknes has an economy based on the production of fruits and vegetables. The Sultan Moulay Ismail ordered the construction of stunning monuments all around the city. The medina of Meknes (Old Town) was built by the Almohad Sultan Abdel Moumen during the 12th century. 500 000 slaves built a huge imperial city, which includes dozens of palaces, gardens, lakes, stables and storehouses. The city walls are incomplete but they surround the medina along 25 km (16 mi). Don’t miss the Royal Stables, the Imperial City, the Place el Hedim, the Ville Nouvelle, the Darjamal Museum and the Fantasia Festival in September. The four imperial cities of Morocco are Meknès, Fez (Fes), Marrakech and Rabat. Hotels in Meknes
